Horizon House Receives BNI Foundation “2018 Givers Gain” Grant
Horizon House is a recipient of the BNI Foundation “2018 Givers Gain Grant”. Every year the BNI Foundation awards five $1,000 grants to organizations for projects that will benefit students. Horizon House was one of five deserving national organizations awarded the grant because of the stellar work done by the PEACE program. PEACE is committed to helping young people living with early psychosis while living fulfilled lives in their communities.
IS THAT A BATH TUB FILLED WITH PAJAMAS? SURE IS…
Thanks to Taiba and Roc of Dipasquale Construction there will be many women and men feeling warm for the Holidays. Taiba answered the call to action by Pat Nogar of the Sophia Group to help provide the people served by Horizon House with warm cozy PJs this holiday season. We are amazed that the tub was too small to hold the over 50 pairs of beautiful and warm pajamas.
So, even if you can’t fill a bathtub, consider joining us as we fill the hearts of many with holiday joy.
Another Year of Grateful Service
Every year, the excitement of the Tuesday before Thanksgiving is unlike every other day of the year. It’s the one day that no one gets upset by standing in the long line to enter Ron’s Café for the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon.
Meals are served by board members, executive staff, and volunteers. Over the last several years, even the Drexel University Basketball coaches have stepped up to serve with big smiles and kind words.
We, like many others, remember with kindness and care the many men and women which we are honored to serve.
Community Building Stronger Relationships with our Families
We extend a “Big Thank You” to David Kauffman for connecting Horizon House with his friends at the Haverford YMCA. We were able to receive an incredible donation of 150 new winter coats for our families with children who need them the most. We are always grateful for our community of friends and supporters with hearts for giving!
Celebrating 21 Years of Marriage
Larry and Darlene Guess celebrated 21 blissful years of marriage, with an amazing reception planned and executed by staff that has supported them since before they were married. The couple shares an apartment in Roxborough, where they live independently. They love being married and spending time together. They have developed a wide social network in the community through work, social activities, and church.
Attending the celebration were staff and friends who witnessed their nuptials 21 years ago including the best man, photographer, and peers!
All Darlene could say was, “I’m soooo happy.”
Horizon House’s “Bird Man ” in the the Red Zone
Horizon House was proudly recognized by the Philadelphia Eagles Red Zone program presented by Philadelphia Insurance. Loren, our own “Bird Man” and his brother-in-law Andre represented Horizon House in the stands while Marcie Cole and Pamela Nabried-Abdullah informed passersby of the work we do and shared Horizon House information and HH items at a designated booth on the main concourse. Loren’s brother in law, said, “Loren, who is an avid Eagles fan -had a big old smile plastered across his face. It made my day to see the thrill and excitement he enjoyed throughout the game. Loren had made a profound statement to me when I asked are enjoying yourself. Loren- stated that ” he is blessed” and I confirmed to him. “Yes, you are blessed”. And, most exciting for Loren…the Eagles won!!!!!
“Celebrating You,” a Great Success
What an incredible evening for “Celebrating You,” an event to thank 4 exceptional community leaders and the organizations they lead, for their dedication to the Horizon House community and for giving joy to those we serve.
This year’s Horizon House Community Leaders Awards were presented to David Kauffman, BNI Main Line I, Karen Ebbert, Networking Women PA, Patricia Nogar, The Sophia Group, and Pamela Follo Badolato, The Plaid Pajama Project. The awards are our way of thanking our community partners and highlighting the exemplary partnerships which collaboratively have transformed the lives of the men and women we serve.
We also extend a big thank you to Geoff Dodd, Store Manager, and staff of Raymour and Flanagan, KoP for graciously opening their doors to host the event and for presenting Horizon House with a special gift as part of their community outreach.

Back to School Stress Eased for 150 Families
Have you ever wondered how disadvantaged students afford the school supplies they need? According to a new survey from Deloitte that analyzes back-to-school buying trends, parents will spend an estimated $510 per household on school supplies this year.
Thanks to the generosity of BNI Mainline I- Voices initiative, students in our PEACE program and parents in our Housing programs received a little assistance to begin the school year. 150 backpacks, loaded with school supplies were donated and distributed. At Horizon House we understand that support to the men and women we serve is more than a mere treatment of a diagnosis. Our goal is for the whole person to thrive. This act of kindness from our BNI Mainline I community partners truly alleviated stress and anxiety for the recipients.
